If you run Allen-Bradley PanelView Plus 6 terminals, you've probably already discovered the uncomfortable truth: Rockwell discontinued the line — most catalog numbers on September 30, 2021 — and the official lifecycle status reads "No planned RA replacement." There is no drop-in successor. When a 2711P-T10C4D8 dies on your line today, you have exactly three options, and only one of them gets you running this week.
Option 1: Migrate to PanelView Plus 7
The official path. A PanelView Plus 7 terminal is a genuinely better piece of hardware, but "migration" is the operative word, not "replacement":
- The application must be converted. Your .mer runtime doesn't just copy across — the project needs to be opened, converted to a current FactoryTalk View ME version, checked screen-by-screen, and re-deployed. If the original .apa project archive is missing (very common on machines bought used), you're partially rebuilding.
- The cutout may not match. Several PVP7 sizes have different panel cutouts and depths than their PVP6 equivalents. That can mean an adapter plate — or sheet-metal work on a painted enclosure.
- Cost. Between the terminal (four figures), conversion labor, and downtime for changeover, a single-terminal migration typically lands well north of $3,000 all-in.
Migration is the right call eventually — as a planned project. It's a terrible answer at 6 AM with a dead screen and a production schedule.
Option 2: Buy a used PVP6
eBay and surplus houses carry used PanelView Plus 6 terminals, typically $300–$1,200 depending on size and condition. Three problems:
- You're buying the same aged hardware that just failed. The dominant PVP6 failures — worn touch layer, tired backlight, aged power-supply capacitors — are time-and-hours failures. A used unit has someone else's hours on it.
- Warranty is 30 days if you're lucky.
- You still have to load and prove your application on the replacement, which means finding that .mer file and hoping the firmware versions cooperate.
A used unit is a reasonable spare-shelf strategy. As a fix, it's a coin flip.
Option 3: Repair your terminal
The failures that kill PVP6 terminals are, almost boringly, repairable:
- Touchscreen not responding (including the fatal "3a" touch error) — the resistive digitizer is a replaceable component.
- Dark or dim display — backlight failure; the display itself is usually fine. Flashlight test: if you can faintly see graphics, it's the backlight.
- Dead unit — power-supply failure, overwhelmingly aged electrolytic capacitors.
- Boot loops — often power-related, sometimes recoverable firmware.
Critically, your application survives. The runtime lives in the terminal's flash (or CF card) and none of these repairs touch it. The terminal goes back in the same cutout, with the same comms config, running the same screens — no conversion project, no re-validation.

- Running many PVP6 units? Do both: repair failures as they come, keep one repaired unit as a hot spare, and migrate on planned outages. That's how most plants are actually handling the PVP6 sunset.
The one thing not to do is wait for the failure with no plan — because the terminal will pick the timing, and it has bad taste in timing.
