HMI Screen Dark or Black — Usually a $0-Parts-Wasted Backlight Repair

Shine a flashlight at the dark screen at an angle. If you can faintly see your graphics, the display works — the backlight has failed. This is the single most common HMI failure on 24/7-duty machines, and one of the cleanest repairs there is. If the screen is truly black with no ghost image, the power supply or video path is the suspect — also repairable.

What's usually behind it

CCFL backlight end-of-life

Older panels use fluorescent tubes rated for ~50,000 hours — about 6 years of 24/7 duty. They dim, pink, flicker, and die. We replace them, or convert to LED where a proven kit exists so it never happens again.

Backlight inverter failure

The high-voltage inverter that drives CCFL tubes fails on its own schedule. Same repair visit, same flat price.

Power supply capacitor aging

A screen that is fully dead (no ghost image, no LEDs) usually traces to aged electrolytic capacitors in the power supply — the classic Siemens Comfort Panel failure. Recapped and load-tested.
